Biography

Perla Balbuena is a Professor in the Department of Chemical Engineering at Texas A&M University and holds the Mike O’Connor Chair Professor position. She is also the Director of Research for Chemical Engineering and an affiliated faculty member in the Materials Science & Engineering program. Balbuena earned her Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering from the University of Texas at Austin in 1996, her M.S.E. from the University of Pennsylvania in 1983, and her B.S. from Universidad Tecnológica Nacional in Argentina in 1973. Her research interests include computational materials analysis design, interfacial phenomena, energy storage specifically in batteries, catalysis, and separations. Balbuena has received numerous awards for her contributions to the field, including being named a Fellow of the Electrochemical Society in 2022 and a Fellow of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers in 2020. In 2013, she was recognized as a Fellow by the American Association for the Advancement of Science and has received multiple teaching and research excellence awards from Texas A&M University. Balbuena is committed to advancing research and education in chemical engineering and mentoring the next generation of engineers.
