Biography

Perry B. Johnson is a music scholar and cultural historian, with a primary research focus on music and popular culture within American cultural histories. His work emphasizes the importance of archives and public scholarship as it relates to power, identity, and belonging. Currently, he is developing a manuscript that explores the cultural history of sexual misconduct in America's popular music industries, alongside a digital database that maps allegations of such misconduct. Co-founder and co-director of The Sound of Victory with Courtney M. Cox, Johnson leads an interdisciplinary initiative investigating the historical relationship between music, sound, and sport. He is also the producer and co-host of the podcast 'Sounding Off,' which highlights voices of athletes, artists, and public intellectuals working at this intersection. Johnson's research includes an historic examination of the NFL’s Super Bowl halftime show, which is the subject of a forthcoming book manuscript detailing its nuanced cultural history.
