Biography

Perry J. Pickhardt graduated from the University of Wisconsin–Madison with a Bachelor of Science in Physics in 1991, securing the top class rank. He then attended the University of Michigan Medical School under the Health Professions Scholarship Program, graduating with his Doctor of Medicine in 1995, and receiving the Hewlett-Packard Award for being the top graduate. His residency in diagnostic radiology was completed at the Mallinckrodt Institute of Radiology at Washington University in St. Louis from 1995 to 1999. Following his residency, Dr. Pickhardt served in the U.S. Navy and held the position of Department Head of Radiology at the U.S. Naval Hospital in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. He was also twice honored as Teacher of the Year at the National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda, MD. Since joining the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health in 2003, he has achieved promotions to Associate Professor in 2009 and Tenured Professor in 2019. Dr. Pickhardt has a prolific record with over 500 scientific publications and has received numerous awards for his research, including the Gold Medal from the Society of Abdominal Radiology in 2024. His research interests include CT colonography for colorectal cancer screening, machine learning and artificial intelligence in imaging, and oncologic imaging.
