Dr. Pete Hurd

Biography

Pete Hurd is a professor in the Department of Psychology at the University of Alberta. He has been a faculty member since 2001 and is affiliated with the Neuroscience and Mental Health Institute. His research interests primarily include neuroscience, genetics, behavioral ecology, and the study of individual differences in social behavior in both human and non-human animals. Hurd's early research was influenced by the work of Jane Goodall and focused on behavioral studies in natural environments. His methodological approaches involve mathematical modeling, neural networks, and genetic algorithms aimed at understanding evolution and communication strategies in conflicting interests. Over the last 15 to 20 years, he has delved into the developmental processes that influence personality and behavioral differences, particularly examining sexual differentiation. Hurd teaches various courses, including Introductory Psychology and Behavioral Genetics, and actively involves undergraduate and graduate students in his research lab.
