Professor Peter Langdon has over 20 years of experience working with lake sediments and ecosystems around the world. For more than 15 years, he has increasingly focused on freshwater ecosystem responses and resilience in relation to multidimensional drivers, linking palaeolimnology with contemporary limnology. Together with colleagues, he has developed a series of novel metrics based on system structures and networks to measure freshwater system resilience over time, particularly in relation to pollution-related drivers and the challenges posed by climate change. His research employs a range of techniques to reconstruct environmental-human interactions, including microfossils, stable isotopes, and molecular approaches such as sedimentary DNA. He has published over 100 papers in international journals and worked with a wide variety of grants from national and international funding agencies. At the University of Southampton, he has made significant contributions towards its strategic aims, holding various roles including Director of Admissions, Director of Programmes, and Head of School. Professor Langdon has chaired the University’s fieldwork group, overseeing field activities across the institution.
