Professor Dr. Peter Paul Verbeek

Biography

Peter-Paul Verbeek is an Honorary Professor in the Department of Philosophy at the University of Twente, serving as the chair of the Philosophy of Human-Technology Relations research group and as co-director of DesignLab. His research explores the relationship between humans and technology from an ethical perspective, particularly how technologies mediate these relationships. Verbeek has received multiple prestigious awards, including the VENI, VIDI, and VICI awards from the Netherlands Organization for Scientific Research and has been involved in significant research projects focusing on ethically responsible technology use. He has contributed to various committees, notably the UNESCO World Commission on the Ethics of Scientific Knowledge and Technology, and has held leadership roles such as President of the Society for Philosophy and Technology. His scholarly work addresses pressing ethical questions concerning socially disruptive technologies, and he actively engages in public discourse regarding the implications of technology in society.
