Biography

Peter Adkins is a Lecturer in Modernist Literature at the University of Edinburgh. He is the programme director for the MSc in Literature and Modernity, and has a research focus on ecocriticism, animal studies, and the Anthropocene. He completed his PhD in modernism at the University of Kent in 2019 and has been a permanent member of staff at the University of Edinburgh since 2024. His current research interests include the ways modernist writers reacted to the rapidly changing planetary conditions and the implications of nonhuman life and environmental change. His monograph, Modernist Anthropocene (2022), was shortlisted for the British Society for Literature and Science's annual book prize and received positive reviews in major academic journals. He is actively involved in various learned societies, including the British Association for Modernist Studies and the Scottish Network of Modernist Studies, and has organized symposiums focused on the cultural history of BP and modernist studies. Adkins has also contributed to several publications and serves as an invited speaker for numerous conferences. He is engaged in teaching undergraduate and postgraduate courses related to literature, modernist aesthetics and has supervised numerous PhD projects in related areas.
