Biography

Peter Andreas is the John Hay Professor of International Studies and Political Science at Brown University. He joined the Watson Institute in the fall of 2001 and holds a joint appointment in the Department of Political Science. Previously, Andreas was an academy scholar at Harvard University and a research fellow at the Brookings Institution, and he received funding as a SSRC-MacArthur Foundation Fellow in International Peace and Security. He has an M.A. and Ph.D. in Government from Cornell University and a B.A. in Political Science from Swarthmore College. Andreas has authored, co-authored, or co-edited a dozen books, including his recent work, "The Illicit Global Economy: Everyone Needs to Know" (Oxford University Press, 2025), and is currently working on another book titled "Contraband Capitalism: Smugglers Made the Modern World" (under contract with Princeton University Press). His research interests revolve around security studies, political economy, and transnational crime, particularly focusing on the clandestine dimensions of globalization involving illicit cross-border flows. He has published widely in academic and policy journals and has contributed to major media outlets. Andreas has received the 2024 Distinguished Scholar Award from the International Association for the Study of Organized Crime for his outstanding contributions to organized crime research.
