Peter S. Aronson, MD, is the C. N. H. Long Professor of Medicine in Nephrology at Yale University. He completed his undergraduate education at the University of Rochester and earned his MD from New York University. After residency training in internal medicine at the University of North Carolina, he served as a research fellow at the National Institutes of Health before joining Yale as a nephrology fellow in 1974. Since becoming a faculty member in 1977, he has held the position of Chief of the Section of Nephrology from 1987 to 2002 and currently serves as the Associate Director of the Yale M.D.-Ph.D. Program. Aronson's research focuses on the mechanisms regulating sodium, chloride, acid-base, and oxalate excretion in the kidney, primarily through studying membrane transport proteins. He has received numerous awards, including the Young Investigator Award from the American Society of Nephrology, the Homer W. Smith Award, and has been elected as a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. He actively participates in teaching medical students and has received the Charles W. Bohmfalk Teaching Prize for his contributions to basic sciences education.
