Dr. Peter Bankhead

Biography

Peter Bankhead is a Reader at the University of Edinburgh, where he specializes in bioimage analysis and digital pathology. His research is primarily focused on developing innovative approaches to analyze whole slide images of tissue, collaborating closely with pathologists and researchers to address significant biomedical questions. A major challenge in this field is the size and complexity of whole slide images, which can typically exceed 50 GB and contain millions of cells. To tackle these challenges, Peter combines conventional image processing techniques with machine learning and deep learning methods to interrogate large datasets at multiple resolutions. He is particularly motivated by the necessity to create new algorithms that are efficient, intuitive, and accessible to the research community. As part of this endeavor, Peter developed QuPath, an open-source digital pathology platform that is utilized in laboratories globally for various image analysis applications. His research group continues to advance and maintain QuPath, contributing to its ongoing success and expansion.
