Biography

Peter Barcza is one of Canada's versatile baritones, acclaimed nationally and internationally for his wide range of repertoire. He graduated from the Opera Department of the University of Toronto, where he studied under the renowned Canadian baritone Louis Quilico. Barcza continued his studies at L’École d’Art Lyrique de L’Opéra de Paris in France and Villa Schifanoia Graduate School of Fine Arts in Italy, where he trained with the great Italian baritone Tito Gobbi. At the unusually early age of 22, he began his career with the Canadian Opera Company, performing over 50 leading roles both in Canada and abroad at prestigious venues such as the Paris Opéra Comique, New York City Opera, Seattle Opera, and with Canada's major symphony orchestras including the Vancouver Opera, L’Opéra de Montréal, Calgary Opera, and Opera Concert in Toronto. Additionally, he has been a frequent performer in recitals and oratorios, and has been heard with the Toronto Symphony, Montreal Symphony, and the National Arts Centre Orchestra. Barcza is a specialist in the Italian bel canto and Verdi, having portrayed title characters in operas such as Macbeth, Rigoletto, and Hamlet. He also offers private voice lessons.
