Biography

Peter Burgess is a critical sociologist with research interests in political education and youth political engagement. His doctoral research, conducted between 2018 and 2024 under the supervision of Professor Sharon Gewirtz and Dr. Tania de St Croix, explores progressive political engagement and activism among young working-class Muslims in West London. He teaches at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels, including courses in BA Social Sciences and MA Education. Additionally, he is researching young people's knowledge of work, employment rights, and trade unions, co-producing teaching and learning materials for Personal, Social, Health and Economic (PSHE) Citizenship lessons with Sixth Form students at a school in North London. As co-convenor of the British Sociological Association's Activism-in-Sociology Forum, he aims to build bridges between academic sociology and social movements and is a member of the pro-migrant campaigning group Social Scientists Against a Hostile Environment (SSAHE).
