Peter J. Carroll specializes in social and cultural history of 19th and 20th century China. His research interests include urban history, Chinese modernism, popular material culture, gender and sexuality, nationalism, and International History with a focus on China and global exchange. He is a two-time Fulbright recipient and has held fellowships at prestigious institutions including the Project on Cities and Urban Knowledges at the International Center for Advanced Studies at New York University, and the John W. He is currently working on a book project that explores ideas of suicide in modern Chinese society during the 20th century. His teaching interests encompass modern Chinese history, particularly during the late Qing, Republican, and PRC periods, focusing on social, cultural, and political history, as well as gender and sexuality studies. He has taught a variety of courses related to Chinese civilization, Qing history, and the dynamics of nationalism, among other themes.
