Biography

Peter Cawley received his BSc and PhD degrees in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Bristol in 1975 and 1979 respectively. In 1986, he completed a Diploma with Distinction in Teaching and Course Development at the Institute of Education, University of London. He worked in the industry from 1979 to 1981 before joining the Mechanical Engineering Department where he initially served as a lecturer, thereafter becoming a senior lecturer, reader, and professor. He was Head of the Department from 2012 to 2019 and Associate Dean for Enterprise in the Faculty of Engineering. He formed and led the Non-destructive Evaluation (NDE) research group from 1985 to 2020 and was the principal investigator for the UK's Research Centre in NDE (RCNDE) from its formation in 2003 until 2020, publishing over 220 refereed journal papers in the field. Cawley is a fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering (elected in 2006) and the Royal Society (elected in 2010). He is the director of several spin-out companies including Guided Ultrasonics Ltd, Permasense Ltd, and Integration Diagnostics Ltd, and currently serves as chairman of Cognition Energy Ltd.
