Biography

Professor Peter Currie is a world-renowned developmental evolutionary stem cell biologist whose research focuses on the genetic basis of skeletal muscle stem cell action, development, evolution, and disease. His key discoveries involve utilizing models, particularly zebrafish, to define the genetic and evolutionary basis of muscle formation and growth across vertebrate phylogeny. Professor Currie has significantly contributed to the development of zebrafish disease models for human muscle disease and regeneration biology, and he has played an instrumental role in establishing shark embryology as part of the modern evolutionary paradigm to understand the evolutionary origins of the vertebrate body plan. In 2016, he was appointed Director of Research at the Australian Regenerative Medicine Institute at Monash University. He is a recipient of the European Molecular Biology Organization Young Investigators Award and the Wellcome Trust International Research Fellowship, and he currently serves as a Principal Research Fellow at the National Health and Medical Research Council in Australia. Furthermore, he is an elected Fellow of the Australian Academy of Science.
