Peter Doel completed his undergraduate studies in Physics at Durham University from 1983 to 1986, where he was part of the astronomical instrumentation group. He obtained his PhD in Adaptive Optics in 1990, with a thesis that focused on the construction of civilian adaptive optics systems for astronomy, particularly the MARTINI instrument. Following his PhD, he worked as a Research Assistant in the astronomical instrumentation group, where he contributed to the upgrades of the MARTINI instrument to new high-order adaptive optics for the William Herschel Telescope. In October 1998, he joined the Optical Science Laboratory at University College London (UCL) as a lecturer, where he has been involved in research and education in the field of astronomical instrumentation.
