Dr. Peter Dutton

Biography

Peter Dutton is a Lecturer in Law, Senior Research Scholar in Law, and Senior Fellow at the Paul Tsai China Center at Yale Law School. He teaches International Law and has a long and distinguished career in legal academics and military service. Dutton previously held positions as a professor of international law at the Stockton Center for International Law at the U.S. Naval War College, where he also served as interim dean and director of the China Maritime Studies Institute. He has more than 40 years of experience in the U.S. Navy, with a background as a naval flight officer and Judge Advocate, and has been involved in various operational and advisory roles concerning Asia-Pacific policies at high levels of government. Dutton's research interests are interdisciplinary, blending international law, China studies, and international politics, with a particular focus on the legal aspects of maritime issues in the East and South China Seas. His writings examine geopolitical strategies, Chinese perspectives on sovereignty and international law, and the strategic implications of China's maritime expansion. Dutton is also a non-resident affiliate researcher at the Fairbank Center for Chinese Studies at Harvard University and an affiliated scholar at the US-Asia Law Institute at New York University School of Law.
