Biography

Peter Fisher is the Thomas Frank (1977) Professor of Physics and serves as the associate vice president of research at MIT. He leads the newly established Office of Research Computing Data and previously headed the Department of Physics from 2013 to 2022. In addition, Fisher directed the Experimental Nuclear and Particle Physics Division from 2002 to 2013. His research interests include the detection of dark matter, primordial black holes, and the classical/quantum interface in electrodynamics. He has received several honors, including being appointed as a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science in 2020 and an American Physical Society Fellow in 2006. Fisher has been recognized multiple times for his teaching excellence, receiving the Buechner Faculty Award in both 2000 and 2011. He has made significant contributions in the field of particle physics, particularly in relation to W-boson self-couplings and top mass predictions. Fisher is an advocate for the integration of computational methods in research, reflecting his role in enhancing research computing capabilities at MIT.
