Peter B. Flemings is a Professor in the Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences at the Jackson School of Geosciences, University of Texas at Austin. He conducts research that combines theoretical analysis with observations to study crustal fluid flow over human geological timescales. His work explores classical questions concerning the relationships between faulting, pressure, and stress; the variability of permeability in the shallow crust; and the controls on continental margin morphology by fluid flow. Further, he investigates the movement of hydrocarbons over geological production timescales and the mechanisms by which gas and oil vents form. Flemings also leads an industry-supported research consortium (UT GeoFluids) that integrates geomechanical modeling, experimental analysis, and field studies to understand pore pressure and fluid flow in basins. He has made significant contributions to the study of methane hydrates and works on initiatives to drill these resources in the Gulf of Mexico. He received his Ph.D. in Geology from Cornell University in 1990 and has held various positions in academia, contributing notably to committees and initiatives related to geosciences research, and has received numerous awards for his work.
