Biography

Peter Friend studied medicine at Cambridge and qualified as a trained surgeon at St Thomas’s Hospital, London. He undertook a period of research at the University of Cambridge under the supervision of Professor Sir Roy Calne. In 1988, he was appointed as a Visiting Assistant Professor of Surgery at Indiana University Medical Center, USA, where he was responsible for initiating a liver transplantation program. He returned to the UK in 1989 to take up his post as University Lecturer (honorary consultant) in the University Department of Surgery at Cambridge, where he served as Clinical Director of the Cambridge Transplant Unit and Fellow Director of Studies in Medicine at Magdalene College, Cambridge, before taking his current position in 1999. He is an MD and FRCS Emeritus Professor of Transplantation and Consultant Transplant HPB Surgeon, as well as Director of the Oxford Transplant Centre. His experimental interests include the application of isolated perfusion of the liver in various therapeutic areas, particularly using oxygenated blood at normal body temperature to allow recovery from damage and extended preservation for organ transplantation. His clinical research includes small scale pilot studies of novel immunosuppressive strategies and the organization of a multi-centre national trial.
