Peter Gardner is currently a Professor of Analytical Biomedical Spectroscopy at the School of Chemical Engineering and Analytical Science, based at the Photon Science Institute, University of Manchester. His research interests revolve around vibrational spectroscopy, particularly focusing on analytical bioanalytical and biomedical spectroscopy. He obtained his BSc in Chemistry from the University of East Anglia before completing his PhD in Physical Chemistry in 1988. Following successful postdoctoral research appointments at the Fritz-Haber Institute of the Max-Planck Society in Berlin and the Department of Chemistry at the University of Cambridge, he joined the Chemistry Department at UMIST in 1994 as a Lecturer and was promoted to Senior Lecturer in 2000. After the merger forming the University of Manchester, he moved to the School of Chemical Engineering and Analytical Science. Gardner has gained international recognition for his work in bioanalytical spectroscopy and particularly infrared microspectroscopy, focusing on studying a range of diseases, including prostate and urological cancers. He collaborates with the Paterson Institute for Cancer Research and is involved in developing automated diagnostic systems that utilize infrared spectroscopy. His group is also focused on unraveling spectral artifacts associated with single-cell spectra and developing spectral pathology techniques integrated with AI.
