Biography

Peter Geimer is a professor of Modern and Contemporary Art History at the Freie Universität Berlin. He specializes in the history and theory of photography, 18th-20th century painting, particularly focusing on French art, and the history of science. He studied Art History, Modern German Literature, and Philosophy at universities in Bonn, Cologne, Marburg, and Paris, earning his Magister's degree in Art History from the Philipps University of Marburg. Geimer completed his Ph.D. in Art History at the same institution, and has held postdoctoral fellowships at the Max Planck Institute for the History of Science in Berlin. He has also worked as a scientific researcher in various German institutions, including the University of Konstanz and ETH Zurich. Since 2010, he has been a full professor at the Freie Universität Berlin and has directed projects such as 'BildEvidenz. Geschichte und Ästhetik.' Geimer is currently on leave due to his role as director of the German Forum for Art History in Paris until 2027.
