Biography

Peter E. Gordon is the Amabel B. James Professor of History at Harvard University. He is a scholar of modern European social theory, focusing on themes in continental philosophy and social thought, particularly related to Germany and France in the late-modern era. His work emphasizes critical theory, Western Marxism, the Frankfurt School, Hegelianism, phenomenology, and existentialism. Gordon authored 'Rosenzweig Heidegger: Judaism German Philosophy' (2003), receiving awards such as the Salo Baron Prize and the Goldstein-Goren Prize. His other notable works include 'Continental Divide: Heidegger, Cassirer, Davos' (2010) which won the Jacques Barzun Prize, and 'Adorno and Existence' (2016). He has co-authored and edited numerous collections and is currently finishing a biography on Walter Benjamin. Gordon delivered the Adorno Lectures at the Institute for Social Research in Frankfurt in June 2019.
