Peter Heather joined King's College London in January 2008 as Chair of Medieval History. He was educated at Maidstone Grammar School before moving to New College, Oxford, where he completed his undergraduate degree and doctoral work. Prior to joining King’s, Peter worked at University College London, Yale University, and Worcester College, Oxford. His research interests lie mainly in the history of the Late Roman Empire and its successor states, particularly focusing on the interactions between Roman, Gothic, and Visigoth kingdoms during the medieval period. He has authored several publications, including 'Goths' (Oxford, 1996) and 'Politics, Philosophy, Empire in the Fourth Century' (Liverpool, 2001). His recent work has examined issues of migration, ethnicity, and the legal systems of the Roman Empire’s successor states, aiming to understand the evolution of Christian authority structures in these contexts. Peter welcomes applications from students interested in Late Antiquity and the early Middle Ages, particularly those topics that move beyond Carolingian studies.
