Biography

Professor Peter Henningsen is a prominent figure in the field of psychosomatic medicine, focusing on chronic somatic complaints and their inadequate organic explanations. His research covers somatoform and functional complaints, including pain and functional disturbances. He plays a coordinating role in diagnostic and therapeutic studies, as well as in functional imaging psychophysiological studies examining the neurophysiological correlates of patient experiences. Henningsen studied medicine in Stuttgart-Hohenheim, Freiburg, Berlin, and Cambridge, UK. After completing his training as a neurologist in Berlin and Heidelberg, he made a transition into psychosomatic medicine, acquiring his postdoctoral teaching qualification (habilitation) in 2002. He was appointed to the faculty in 2005 in the Department of Psychosomatic Medicine and Psychotherapy. Henningsen served as vice dean in 2006 and later as dean of the TUM School of Medicine from 2010 to 2019. He is also a member of the Medical Committee of the German Science Council and a spokesman for German full professors in Psychosomatic Medicine, in addition to being a board member of the Viktor-von-Weizsäcker Society.
