Biography

Peter Holquist is the Ronald S. Lauder Endowed Term Associate Professor in the Department of History at the University of Pennsylvania. His teaching and research focus on the history of Russia and modern Europe. He is the author of 'Making War, Forging Revolution: Russia's Continuum Crisis, 1914-1921' (Harvard, 2002) and has served for ten years as the editor of the journal 'Kritika: Explorations in Russian and Eurasian History'. In 2010, he was co-recipient of the 'Distinguished Editor' Award from the Council of Editors of Learned Journals for his work with 'Kritika'. Holquist has published numerous articles that examine Russia's experience during World War I and the Russian Revolution, addressing themes of continuity and change from the imperial period through the Stalin era. His current project, 'Right War', studies the emergence of international law regarding warfare in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, exploring how imperial Russia contributed to and practiced the norms of warfare. He received his Ph.D. with distinction from Columbia University in 1995 and has taught at Cornell University for nine years before joining Penn's History Department in Fall 2006. Holquist offers courses on imperial Russia, the Soviet Union, and Europe in the nineteenth century, and works with graduate students in the fields of Russian and Soviet history.
