Biography

Peter Jenni is a Swiss particle physicist known for his significant contributions to high-energy physics, particularly as a key figure in the development and success of the ATLAS experiment at CERN. After completing his physics studies at the University of Bern in 1973 and his doctorate at ETH Zurich in 1976, Jenni became involved in CERN experiments beginning in 1972. His early work included projects with the Synchrocyclotron and the Proton Synchrotron. From 1978 to 1979, he worked as a researcher at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center (SLAC). After joining CERN in 1980, he played a crucial role in the UA2 experiment, which was instrumental in the discovery of the W and Z bosons in 1983. In the late 1980s, he shifted his focus to the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), initiating the proto-collaboration that eventually evolved into the ATLAS collaboration in 1992. He served as the spokesperson for ATLAS from its formal approval in 1995 until 2009, overseeing the development and construction of the detector and facilitating collaboration among the global scientific community. In recognition of his contributions, Jenni has received several prestigious awards, including the High Energy Particle Physics Prize and multiple honorary doctorates from universities across Europe. He remains active in research and collaboration with the Freiburg ATLAS group and continues to contribute to findings in particle physics.
