Dr. Peter Jones

Biography

Vice Admiral Peter Jones is a retired Australian naval officer and currently serves as an Adjunct Professor at UNSW Canberra in the School of Humanities and Social Sciences. He joined the Royal Australian Naval College at the age of 16 in 1974 and has had a distinguished naval career that includes early sea service on various vessels, including the aircraft carrier HMAS Melbourne and the destroyer HMAS Sydney. Serving as a gunnery officer on the frigate HMAS Canberra, he later commanded multiple operations in the Arabian Gulf and contributed significantly to the Maritime Interception Operations during the Iraq War. Jones has held several shore appointments, including Director of Naval Strategy & Futures, and has received numerous commendations throughout his career, such as the Distinguished Service Cross and the Order of Australia. His academic credentials include a Bachelor of Arts and a Master of Arts from the University of New South Wales, as well as completion of the Advanced Management Program at Harvard Business School. He is recognized for his expertise in Australian naval history, defence policy, and maritime strategy. Beyond his military and academic career, Jones is involved with the Australian Naval Institute and serves on the Defence National Security Committee.
