Biography

Peter Jones is a member of the Independent Transport Commission, the Department for Transport’s Science Advisory Council, and the City of London Transport Strategy Board. He also serves on the EIT Urban Mobility Academic Advisory Board and co-chairs the Department for Transport's Joint Analysis Development Panel. Additionally, he is a member of the Dubai Council for Future Transportation, the South-East Wales Transport Commission, and the Hong Kong ERP Advisory Panel, and is involved with the CIHT Urban Design Panel. He has acted as Scientific Coordinator for several EU-funded projects, including the ‘CREATE’ project focused on changing trends in urban mobility and future city challenges, and the ‘MORE’ project, which evaluates the optimum design and operation of road-space on main urban roads. Currently, he is the work package lead for the EU SUMP-PLUS project, which investigates transitions to sustainable urban mobility and enhances cross-sector links. Jones plays a leading role in several Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) projects on sustainable urban mobility transitions in Africa and governance issues associated with the introduction of automated vehicles in the UK. He advises the European Commission and numerous cities and national governments worldwide and was awarded an OBE for services to national transport policy in January 2017. His extensive teaching and research interests encompass transport policy, traveler attitudes, travel trends and demand determinants, traffic restraint studies, policy generation, and public engagement methodologies, along with novel survey and appraisal methods, urban street planning, and design. Recent research includes issues related to the future allocation of street-space and the value of public space within scheme appraisals.
