Biography

Peter Kanowski is a Professor of Forestry at the Fenner School of Environment and Society at the Australian National University. He serves as the Director of HDR Supervision and previously held roles including Pro Vice-Chancellor (Graduate Research) and Head of the Department of Forestry. His academic pursuits focus on forest environmental policy, sustainability, and community engagement. He has been involved in various research projects with ACIAR and co-convenes a graduate course in International Forest Governance at the University of Freiburg. Kanowski holds an Honours degree in Forestry from ANU and a doctorate in forest genetics from Oxford University. Over his career, he worked in forest management research in Australia for three years, lectured at Oxford’s Forestry Institute for seven years, and took the Chair of Forestry at ANU in 1995. He has served as Deputy Director General at CIFOR and has actively participated in the Forests Dialogue since 2006. His research interests include forest governance, certification, and urban forests, and he is currently accepting new research students.
