Biography

Peter Karuso is an internationally recognized chemist and chemical biologist, focused on the application of chemistry to natural products within biotechnology. He completed his PhD in 1985 at the University of Sydney in the Department of Organic Chemistry and later pursued postdoctoral research at the University of Auckland and the University of Hawaii. After a tenure as a research scientist at Texas A&M University, he received an Alexander von Humboldt Fellowship, which allowed him to work with Horst Kessler at Technische Universität München. He joined Macquarie University, where he advanced from Lecturer to full Professor in the Department of Chemistry & Biomolecular Sciences. His research includes the commercialization of the proteomics stain 'Deep Purple,' recognized in Nature, and the founding of Fluorotechnics Pty Ltd, which was listed on the ASX in 2008. In 2022, he became an Adjunct Professor at the University of NSW, focusing on biotechnology and biomolecular sciences, and he launched MINIMUM bio Pty Ltd, a company dedicated to the rapid identification of protein drug targets using innovative technology combining molecular biology and machine learning. His work aims to expedite the development of life-saving drugs.
