Peter Lansdorp is a Distinguished Scientist at the Terry Fox Laboratory, BC Cancer, and a Professor of Medical Genetics at the University of British Columbia (UBC). He is a fellow of the Royal Society of Canada and the Academia Europaea. Born and raised in the Netherlands, he obtained his MD at Erasmus University Rotterdam and his PhD in Experimental Hematology from the University of Amsterdam. In 1985, he moved to the Terry Fox Laboratory in Vancouver, where he focused on the purification biology of human and murine blood-forming stem cells. His work has significantly contributed to the field of telomere biology, particularly through the development of quantitative fluorescence in situ hybridization (Q-FISH) techniques, which are now standard in the field. From 2011 to 2016, he served as the Scientific Director of the European Research Institute for Biology of Ageing at the University Medical Center Groningen before returning to Vancouver. His research interests now center on stem cell biology and telomere biology, particularly the role of genomic variation in health and disease, and he has pioneered methods such as Strand-seq to study DNA repair and human genome diversity.
