Biography

Peter Littlewood is the Chair of the Department of Physics at the University of Chicago and a Harry Pratt Judson Distinguished Service Professor. He holds a BA and PhD in Physics from the University of Cambridge. Littlewood served as a member of the technical staff and head of the theoretical physics research group at Bell Laboratories in New Jersey before moving to Cambridge in 1997, where he became head of the Theory of Condensed Matter group, and later the head of the Cavendish Laboratory and the Department of Physics. He joined the University of Chicago in 2011 as Associate Lab Director and became Lab Director at Argonne National Lab, returning to the University in 2017. He is active on advisory boards for various institutions, including the Faraday Institution, the Simons Foundation, and several Max Planck Institutes. His research interests encompass superconductivity, superfluids, strongly correlated electronic materials, collective dynamics in glasses, and neuroscience applications related to energy sustainability. Current research focuses on connectomics, non-equilibrium phase transitions in light-matter systems, and materials technologies for energy policy.
