Dr. Peter Loewen

Biography

Peter John Loewen is a Professor in the Department of Government at Cornell University, where he also serves as the Harold Tanner Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences. He is responsible for overseeing a diverse academic community, including 520 faculty members and 4,600 undergraduates within the largest college at Cornell. Loewen has held various leadership positions, including Director of the Munk School of Global Affairs and Public Policy. His research focuses on democratic societies, political decision-making amid technological change, and citizens' engagement with government in times of disruption, specifically relating to the consequences of COVID-19. He co-edited 'Women, Power, Political Representation' published by the University of Toronto Press in 2021 and has contributed to respected journals such as the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences and the American Political Science Review. Loewen earned his Bachelor’s degree in Political Science from Mount Allison University in 2002 and a Ph.D. in Political Science from Université de Montréal in 2008. He has held postdoctoral positions at the University of British Columbia and UC San Diego and has been a visiting scholar at institutions including Princeton University and Stanford University.
