Biography

Peter W. Martin, Jane M.G. Foster Professor of Law, Emeritus at Cornell Law School, writes, speaks, and consults on topics concerning the impact of technology on the functioning of law and legal institutions. A graduate of Harvard Law School, Professor Martin spent years at the Air Force General Counsel's Office before beginning his teaching career at the University of Minnesota Law School in 1967. He joined the Cornell Law School faculty in 1972 and served as Dean from 1980 to 1988. Professor Martin co-founded Cornell's Legal Information Institute (LII) with Thomas R. Bruce in 1992, which has become a heavily used internet law resource and non-profit legal website. In addition to serving as LII's co-director for a decade, Professor Martin created an electronic treatise database on Social Security law, along with online tutorials on legal citation and has written numerous articles on the use of digital technology in law and legal education. From 1996 to 2007, he offered law courses that employed electronic materials prepared for students from a dozen law schools on the internet.
