Biography

Peter Maurer received postdoctoral training in Steven Chu’s group at Stanford University, focusing on the development of novel nanoscale imaging technologies. Prior to joining the Chu Lab, Maurer earned his PhD in physics from Harvard University, where he worked with Mikhail Lukin. During his graduate studies, Maurer utilized quantum optics tools to coherently control individual spins in diamond for applications in quantum information science and bio-sensing. He obtained his undergraduate degree in physics from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH). At the Maurer Lab, research emphasizes the development and application of novel imaging and sensing modalities that enable the investigation of biological systems that are not accessible with conventional techniques. The lab explores coherent control techniques and quantum algorithms that harness solid-state spin systems to increase complexity by combining state-of-the-art biophysics tools. Current projects include the development of nanoscale quantum sensors for NMR spectroscopy of individual biomolecules and a single-molecule platform for quantum sensing, alongside the establishment of new nanophotonics techniques for bio-imaging. Successful development of these novel single-molecule techniques provides powerful tools to investigate fundamental biological questions and lays the foundation for a new generation of diagnostic devices. Additionally, the lab's work on novel quantum sensing protocols extends the understanding of quantum systems in ambient conditions and establishes quantum information technology as a potent resource for biological research.
