Dr. Peter Messerli

Biography

Peter Messerli is a Professor at the University of Bern, leading the Sustainable Development Unit within the Institute of Geography. His research focuses on land system science and sustainable development, with a strong emphasis on socio-ecological systems and land governance, particularly in developing countries. He has been involved in various projects aimed at managing telecoupled landscapes and promoting sustainable provision of ecosystem services while alleviating poverty. His expertise covers global changes affecting land governance, and he actively contributes to knowledge production to inform decision-making processes. Messerli has over ten years of field experience in countries such as Lao PDR, Madagascar, and Ethiopia. He engages in interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary research, fostering partnerships that bridge science and society. In addition, he is affiliated with multiple professional networks and initiatives addressing climate change and land dynamics.
