Biography

Peter Jongho Na's research focuses on the intersection of genetic and psychosocial factors underlying substance use disorders and suicide. His work investigates how environmental and psychosocial influences contribute to addiction and suicidal behavior, with particular emphasis on individuals with co-occurring substance use and psychiatric disorders. To date, he has published more than 90 peer-reviewed manuscripts and book chapters in leading journals including JAMA Psychiatry, American Journal of Psychiatry, and Molecular Psychiatry. Dr. Na is deeply engaged in efforts to advance mental health awareness and reduce stigma at the societal level. In South Korea, which has faced the highest suicide rate among OECD nations for past decades, he has been an active voice promoting evidence-based approaches for suicide prevention and mental health service utilization. His expertise has been sought after by major international media outlets, such as The Guardian, TIME, and the BBC, underscoring the importance of coordinated national strategies to address suicide and mental health crises in South Korea. In addition to his academic and advocacy work, Dr. Na is the author of best-selling books on mental health in Korea, which have been translated into multiple languages, including Japanese, Taiwanese, Thai, Russian, and Vietnamese, thereby extending his global impact.
