Dr. Peter Nelson

Biography

Professor Peter Nelson, a recognized expert in Environmental Studies, is affiliated with Macquarie University, where he has over 30 years of experience in research assessment and control of air pollution issues related to energy production and use. He has made significant contributions to the understanding of mercury and toxic trace metals from industrial sources, particularly through participation in the United Nations frameworks addressing global mercury management. His research led to the establishment of environmental guidelines for controlling emissions from non-ferrous metal smelting. Peter has published over 120 peer-reviewed journal articles and has been involved in a variety of projects focusing on atmospheric chemistry, urban industrial air pollution, and its management. Notably, he served as the Director of the Graduate School of the Environment from 2001 to 2008 and has held various leadership roles since then. His educational background includes a PhD in Physical Chemistry from the University of Sydney, a Bachelor's degree in English Literature from Macquarie University, and a Bachelor's degree in Chemistry with Honors from the University of Sydney. Peter maintains active involvement in several expert groups and programs aimed at advancing research and policy surrounding environmental challenges.
