Dr. Peter Nixon

Biography

Peter Nixon is an affiliate faculty member in the Department of Ophthalmology at Dell Medical School. Born and raised in South Africa, he moved to the United States with his family at the age of 14. He graduated from the University of Alabama in Huntsville and earned his medical degree from the University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Medicine. Nixon completed his ophthalmology residency at the prestigious Callahan Eye Foundation Hospital in Birmingham, known for treating traumatic eye injuries. He went on to finish a two-year vitreoretinal surgery fellowship with Retina Consultants Alabama in conjunction with the UAB Department of Ophthalmology. Nixon specializes in the management of diseases affecting the retina, vitreous, and macula, focusing on conditions such as macular degeneration, retinal detachment, diabetic retinopathy, and macular holes. He has served as a clinical investigator in research trials on new treatments for vitreoretinal diseases and has published numerous articles in peer-reviewed journals, including the American Journal of Ophthalmology and the American Journal of Medicine. Additionally, he has presented research at international meetings for the American Academy of Ophthalmology and the American Society of Retina Specialists. Nixon is an active member of several professional organizations, including the American Academy of Ophthalmology and the Texas Medical Association, and he participates in community education seminars on vitreoretinal diseases. He has also volunteered in Nicaragua, teaching resident surgeons and assisting with surgical care for both adults and children. In his free time, Nixon enjoys automobile racing, cycling, running, and competing in triathlons.
