Dr. Peter Oakes

Biography

Peter Oakes is the Rylands Professor of Biblical Criticism at the University of Manchester. His research focuses on the New Testament studies, particularly the context of Paul's letters and interactions with Graeco-Roman society and culture. He has supervised numerous PhD students, emphasizing Biblical Studies, Classical studies, and Jewish Studies, regularly collaborating with Honorary Research Fellows in his academic endeavors. Oakes began his research with an interest in archaeology, exploring the history of the Roman colony Philippi, which significantly shaped his understanding of the social issues raised in Paul's letters. He has authored 'Reading Romans Pompeii: Paul's Letter Ground Level' and contributed to various scholarly works, including a commentary on Galatians. His recent projects involve preparing a volume on Philippians for the New International Greek Testament Commentary, and he is engaged in research on Coptic manuscripts at the John Rylands Research Institute. Peter is also an active member of several academic societies, including the British New Testament Society and the Society of Biblical Literature, where he participates in discussions aimed at integrating social sciences into Biblical interpretation.
