Biography

Peter Peters is an endowed professor of innovation in classical music at Maastricht University. His academic background is in sociology and philosophy, with a PhD thesis that examines mobilities and technological cultures, utilizing perspectives from social theory and science and technology studies (STS) to analyze the practices of travel. Before joining Maastricht University, Peters was a classical music journalist and critic. From 2008 to 2013, he served as a professor at the research centre ‘Autonomy and the Public Sphere in the Arts’ at Zuyd University in Maastricht, where he developed research focusing on the intersection of artistic research and STS, particularly in relation to site-specific art and the public sphere. His current research explores innovating classical music practices, with a special emphasis on symphonic music. Peters co-developed the research lines at the Maastricht Centre for Innovation in Classical Music (MCICM) that focus on the role of classical music in societal value, the relationship between performers and audiences, and the contributions of classical practices to preserving cultural heritage. He has previously worked with the Cultural Programs department of NOS Television, published articles on classical music, served as editor-in-chief for the monthly 'Mens en Melodie', and has held editorial roles in several academic journals.
