Dr. Peter Polverini

Biography

Peter J. Polverini is the Jonathan Taft Distinguished University Professor of Dentistry and a Professor in the Department of Oral Medicine/Pathology Oncology at the University of Michigan School of Dentistry. He has held significant leadership roles, including Dean Emeritus of the University of Michigan Dental School and has made notable contributions to the field of vascular cancer biology. Polverini completed his DDS at Marquette University and furthered his education with specialty training in Oral Maxillofacial Pathology at Harvard School of Dental Medicine, where he obtained his Doctor of Medical Sciences degree. His research endeavors are centered on the role of cancer stem cells in the development of salivary gland cancer and the neoplastic progression of premalignant oral lesions. An esteemed mentor and scholar, Polverini is recognized for driving innovation in dental education and upholding scientific rigor. His accolades include the Distinguished Scientist Award from the International Association for Dental Research and several awards from Marquette University and Harvard. He is a diplomat of the American Board of Oral Maxillofacial Pathology and a fellow of the American Academy of Oral Maxillofacial Pathology. Polverini's commitment to the advancement of dental research and education is evident through his past presidency of the American Association for Dental Research and his election to the National Academy of Medicine.
