Dr. Peter Pormann

Biography

Peter Pormann studies Classics, French, and Islamic Studies with degrees from the Sorbonne, Hamburg, Tübingen, the University of Leiden, and the University of Oxford. He focuses on the transmission of Greek medical and scientific heritage in the Islamic world and employs information technologies to facilitate study. His publications cover subjects such as medicine and philosophy in late antique Alexandria, Greek-Syriac-Arabic translation techniques, the history of mental illness, hospital provisions in tenth-century Baghdad, and the reception of Graeco-Roman thought in the modern Middle East. Pormann actively investigates interactions among Muslim, Jewish, and Christian scholars writing in Greek, Latin, Syriac, Hebrew, and Arabic from the tenth to the twentieth century. His work contributes to wider societal and cultural impacts, addressing misconceptions and enhancing understanding of the interconnectedness of Islamic culture with Western traditions.
