Dr. Peter Rieker

Biography

Peter Rieker is a Professor at the Institute of Education at the University of Zurich, focusing on extracurricular education and upbringing. His academic journey began with a sociology degree from the University of Frankfurt and the Free University of Berlin, culminating in a Diplom in Sociology in 1987. He pursued postgraduate studies in qualitative methods and completed his doctoral research at the University of Hildesheim, examining ethno-centric orientations among young men, which led to his dissertation in 1996. In 2005, he obtained his Habilitation in sociology, addressing childhood deviations in familial contexts. Rieker has held numerous research and teaching positions, including at the Free University of Berlin and Hildesheim University. Notably, he was a scientific employee and later a project group leader at the German Youth Institute e.V. His teaching also includes guest professorships and seminars at various universities, fostering a rich academic environment for students in social science and educational methodology. His current research interests encompass childhood and youth studies, deviant behavior and desistance, political extremism, migration, and empirical social research methodologies.
