Biography

Peter Rottier is an emeritus professor at Utrecht University in the Netherlands, recognized for his significant contributions to virology and virus diseases. He earned his PhD in plant virology from Wageningen University in 1980, which was preceded by studies in biochemistry in Nijmegen. Throughout his career, he worked in prestigious institutions in the USA, including the Salk Institute, Yale University, and the Scripps Research Institute. In 1990, he became an associate professor, and in 1995, he was appointed as a full professor of Virology and Virus Diseases at the Faculty of Veterinary Sciences at Utrecht University, a position he held until his retirement in 2016. His extensive research largely focused on coronaviruses and arteriviruses, with a lesser focus on influenza viruses. He has specifically examined the biogenesis of viral structural proteins, virus particle assembly, and viral entry into host cells. His innovative approach led to the development of a reverse genetics system for coronaviruses that has been crucial for understanding the pathogenesis of coronaviruses and vaccine development. Rottier has supervised 43 PhD students and has published over 260 articles in renowned peer-reviewed journals such as Nature and Science. Additionally, he is an inventor on several patents regarding vaccine technologies.
