Biography

Peter Roy's laboratory at the University of Toronto focuses on the development of new drug leads and environmentally safe pesticide lead molecules. His group has pioneered PEXIL™ Technology, which enables high-throughput, massively paralleled drug and pesticide screening. Among the key projects in his lab, the discovery of parasitic prodrugs that lead to the bioconversion of small molecule scaffolds into lethal products for parasites stands out. Additionally, the lab is innovating new neuromodulatory nematicides, featuring small-molecule disruptors of motor behavior in nematodes, including the notable Nementin™, which induces convulsions and paralysis through massive neurotransmitter release. Roy's lab has also established a new nematode model for PFIC3 liver disease, identifying candidate drugs that mitigate the defects observed in these worms and have potential utility in mouse models. Furthermore, his research addresses amyloid formation, a root cause of several human diseases, including Parkinson’s, ALS, and Huntington’s disease, utilizing a nematode-based pipeline to yield molecules capable of disrupting amyloid formation.
