Biography

Dr. Peter Ryan is a Teaching Fellow in the Department of Geography at the University of Manchester, focusing on the environmental impacts of prehistoric human activities through palaeoecological research. He earned his BSc in Geography and his MSc in Environmental Archaeology from the University of Manchester and the University of Sheffield, respectively. He completed his PhD in Physical Geography in 2006 and has also carried out post-doctoral research on Iron Age landscapes and deforestation in Upland Britain. His research interests include the environmental impact of Late Mesolithic cultures, utilizing palynology and traditional pollen analysis techniques to study ancient woodland landscapes. Dr. Ryan examines how hunter-gatherer groups influenced their environments, using fire and other techniques to manage landscape resources for hunting. He is also involved in teaching various geography courses, including both introductory and advanced fieldwork methods, as well as specific environmental reconstruction techniques. His commitment to education is evident in his continuous engagement with PhD students and collaborative research efforts, contributing valuable insights to the understanding of early agricultural practices in North-West Europe.
