Biography

Peter Saunders is an Emeritus Professor at the University of New South Wales, specializing in social policy with an extensive career in research and teaching. He served as the Director of the Social Policy Research Centre from February 1987 to July 2007 and held a prestigious Research Chair at the Social Policy Centre. His research interests focus on poverty, income distribution, and social security reform, as well as comparative social policy, particularly in relation to aging and social protection in China. In addition to his academia, he has consulted for various national and international organizations including the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare, OECD, IMF, and the Asian Development Bank. He has contributed significantly to the field through publications, with notable works including 'Ends and Means: Welfare Coping with Economic and Social Change in Australia' and 'Poverty Wars: Reconnecting Research and Reality'. Peter was elected a Fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences in Australia in 1995 and was appointed Scientia Professor in 2006. He is currently the President of the Foundation for International Studies on Social Security, having been elected to this position in 2009. Professor Saunders is also active in overseeing and supervising PhD candidates in various aspects of social policy and economic inequality.
