Biography

Peter Sparling is a Rudolf Arnheim Distinguished University Professor Emeritus at the University of Michigan School of Music, Theatre & Dance and an Arthur F. Thurnau Professor Emeritus. A graduate of Interlochen Arts Academy and the Juilliard School, Sparling was a principal dancer with the José Limón Dance Company and the Martha Graham Dance Company. He directed the Peter Sparling Dance Company from 1993 to 2008 and received the Governor’s Michigan Artist Award in 1998. Sparling serves as the associate director and choreographer for New Theater Medicine. He is also a lecturer, published poet, and essayist, with his dances and videos selected for numerous international festivals including the New York Dance Camera Festival and the American Dance Festival. His work 'Climbing Sainte-Victoire' was broadcast on Michigan Television in 2009, and his screendance 'Snowy Owl' was featured at the Cannes Film Festival in 2015. Additionally, he presented five solo exhibits and has works featured in various group shows.
